ATSSA Foundation Supports Scholarships and Memorials

The American Traffic Safety Services Association is focused on creating safer roads and honoring victims of fatal traffic accidents in a wide variety of ways. One of the ways it accomplishes this is through the ATSSA Foundation, which provides a variety of ways for people to support scholarships and memorials for victims of accidents.

The foundation was founded in 1988, and has always focused on roadway safety as a cultural priority. The general public is well aware of the need for roadway safety, but the foundation believes it to be important that those workers who are killed in roadway accidents in work zones are not forgotten and that their families get the support they need. The foundation consistently lobbies state and federal governments to improve work zone safety and general highway safety.

Here’s a brief overview of some of the various scholarship and memorial opportunities offered by the foundation and how you can support those initiatives.

Amazon Smile

Amazon Smile might be the easiest way to support the foundation and help it continue to honor those who have fallen on American roadways and offer scholarship money to children of victims.

Whenever you shop at Amazon you can use the foundation’s special Amazon Smile link, and then with every purchase you make, Amazon will make a donation directly to the ATSSA Foundation. Donating is extremely easy—set the foundation to be your default Amazon Smile organization, and Amazon will take care of the rest from there.

Work zone awareness initiatives

The ATSSA Foundation has a number of initiatives geared toward creating more work zone awareness for road crews and construction workers. The foundation regularly puts out public service announcements for people to obey work zone signs in Vermont and beyond. The foundation also advances programs that allow drivers to participate in discussions to address work zone injuries and deaths.

The foundation also offers Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarships for loved ones of deceased or permanently disabled workers, as well as Experience Camps Travel Scholarships for children who have lost parents, caregivers or siblings to roadway work zone accidents. The foundation will continue to offer these scholarships until the number of work zone fatalities is zero.

Finally, the foundation has a National Work Zone Memorial it offers to honor all the lives lost in work zones. The idea is that creating such a memorial makes the fatalities more tangible and “real” to the people who have the power to make policies affecting roadway safety, as well as drivers who need to be aware of the dangers associated with failure to obey work zone and traffic signs in Vermont and beyond. Here again, the foundation intends to continue this memorial program until there are no more workers killed in work zone accidents.
